Ajax are exploring the return of familiar face Edson Álvarez as they seek reinforcements in defensive midfield. The 27-year-old Mexican, currently at West Ham United, has emerged as their top target to fill the newly vacated 'number 6' role.
Midfield Reinforcement Becomes Top Priority
The departure of Jordan Henderson in July left a clear void in Ajax’s midfield. Manager John Heitinga has experimented with Jorthy Mokio and Davy Klaassen in that position. However, the club now regard securing an experienced and commanding presence as vital for guiding Mokio and stabilising the team.
Álvarez: A Leading Candidate with Strong Ties
Edson Álvarez is well-known at Ajax, having made 147 official appearances during his previous stint. He featured under Heitinga during their time together at the club and later at West Ham, where Heitinga served as assistant. Álvarez has publicly expressed a desire to return to Amsterdam, making the move both practical and appealing.
Loan Deal Under Consideration
Ajax are pursuing a one-year loan agreement with West Ham rather than a permanent transfer, which is not currently feasible. Financial constraints mean Ajax must first offload players such as Ahmetcan Kaplan and Sivert Mannsverk. A potential sale of Brian Brobbey, who is attracting interest from AS Roma and Saudi clubs, would also open up the necessary funds.
Alternatives Are Ready in Case Talks Stall
If a deal for Álvarez fails to materialise, Ajax have lined up fallback options. One of those is Nemanja Matic, a free agent following his departure from Lyon. At 37, Matic offers leadership and experience—though Ajax would prefer a younger profile with development upside.
