Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has admitted he is "very sad" after being informed that the club is not in a position to offer him a new contract. The 27-year-old, who has two years remaining on his current deal, confirmed he had opportunities to leave Anfield during the summer transfer window amid interest from Real Madrid and Manchester City. Speaking ahead of a Champions League fixture against Atletico Madrid, the midfielder expressed his desire to remain on Merseyside, stating: "As everyone knows, I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which makes me very, very sad. Because this is the right club. I love being here, and this is something special."
Frustration over midfield renewals
According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Mac Allister expected to receive a contract renewal proposal similar to those handed to his midfield teammates Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai. Romano reported that the former Brighton midfielder did not receive the same treatment, creating an uncertain future for him at Anfield despite his continued importance to the squad. This contract disparity comes despite Mac Allister remaining a pivotal figure under manager Andoni Iraola, particularly given Liverpool's lack of a natural, established holding midfielder.
Iraola insists on keeping key midfielder
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has moved quickly to address the situation, reinforcing his desire to keep the Argentine midfielder at the club. Speaking on the matter, Iraola praised the player's recent contributions and World Cup pedigree, saying: "For me, the most important thing is that Alexis wants to be here. I think Alexis has been one of the best players at the club for the last few years... but I want to keep my good players." While Iraola remains focused on retaining his key assets, the club's decision not to offer an extension to a player who signed in 2023 could invite renewed interest from elite European suitors if his contract continues to run down towards its 2028 expiry.
