Antonio Conte Signals Readiness For In-Season Return Amid Manchester United Managerial Uncertainty

Antonio Conte has expressed an openness to returning to management mid-season, heightening speculation regarding the Manchester United vacancy as pressure mounts on Michael Carrick.

Conte Open to In-Season Return

Antonio Conte has signalled an openness to an in-season return to management, a stance that has intensified scrutiny regarding the future of Michael Carrick at Manchester United. Speaking in an interview with The Athletic, the former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager expressed a clear ambition to take charge of a historic club that has fallen below its previous standards, comments that arrive as the Old Trafford hierarchy monitors a difficult start to the 2026/27 campaign.

While the Italian coach remains unattached following his departure from Napoli earlier this year, sources confirm that Manchester United have not initiated contact with him or any other managerial candidates. Despite this, the timing of Conte’s remarks has coincided with the mounting pressure at United, who have collected just five points from their opening five Premier League fixtures. This poor form was further exacerbated by an early exit from the Carabao Cup following a 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford to Fabian Hürzeler’s Brighton & Hove Albion.

Managerial Ambition and Market Outlook

Conte, who has previously secured league titles with Juventus, Inter Milan, and Chelsea, remains one of the most decorated managers currently available in the market. In his discussion with The Athletic, he emphasised that he would be prepared to accept a role mid-season, provided the environment and the project align with his specific standards. He noted the financial disparity between the Premier League and other European divisions, observing that while English clubs possess the resources to compete at the highest level, success requires structural alignment.

"In England today they’re using bazookas, while everywhere else they’re still using a pistol," Conte stated. "But we also need to be careful about how the money is spent. That’s why we were talking earlier about making the right assessments, about having a vision, because you may well have the money, but you have to spend it wisely."

Addressing his desire for a new project, Conte articulated a specific interest in restoring the standing of a traditional giant. "There are many clubs that have somewhat lost sight of their history. I’d like to go to one of these clubs to dust off that history and make it shine once more. Clubs where there’s pressure, where, ultimately, you know full well that you’re not going there just to take part, but to compete."

The Situation at Old Trafford

Speculation surrounding the managerial position at Manchester United persists due to the team’s current trajectory under Michael Carrick. Although Carrick, who oversaw a third-place finish last season, retains backing from the club's hierarchy, the next few weeks are considered decisive for his tenure. While the board has not formalised a contingency plan, names such as Eddie Howe and Fabian Hürzeler have appeared in broader media discussions regarding potential future appointments. Any change in leadership would require complex negotiations regarding the club’s long-term sporting structure and the degree of autonomy any incoming coach would demand over transfer strategy.

For now, Manchester United’s leadership remains committed to the current staff, with the international break offering a period for assessment before the domestic calendar resumes. Conte’s explicit requirement for a clear project and structural ambition serves as a reminder of the criteria he would apply should he enter talks with any club in the coming months.
