Arsenal Weighing Up Future Options For Bayern Munich Defender Kim Min-Jae

Arsenal have added Bayern Munich's Kim Min-jae to their transfer shortlist, though a move for the defender is considered more likely in the summer of 2027 than in January.

Arsenal have included Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae on their transfer shortlist as the club evaluates potential defensive reinforcements for the 2027 calendar year. According to German journalist Christian Falk, the Gunners are monitoring the 29-year-old’s situation in Bavaria, where the South Korea international has faced fluctuating game time under manager Vincent Kompany.

While reports have linked the defender to a potential mid-season move, sources indicate that a winter departure is unlikely. Bayern Munich remain under no immediate pressure to sell, with the player's current contract running until June 2028. Any potential exit is viewed as a more feasible prospect for the summer of 2027, provided the Bundesliga club secures an adequate replacement.

Maurizio Micheli's influence and Arsenal's defensive landscape

The interest from North London is understood to be influenced by Arsenal's chief scout, Maurizio Micheli. Micheli played a pivotal role in recruiting Kim for Napoli during the 2022-23 season, a campaign in which the defender's performances earned him high praise, including a description from then-Napoli head coach Luciano Spalletti as "the best centre-back in the world."

Despite this connection, adding a centre-back is not currently considered the Gunners' primary objective for the January window. Mikel Arteta's side invested heavily in their backline during the 2026 summer transfer window, notably adding Ezri Konsa to a defensive group that already features William Saliba and Piero Hincapié. Arsenal's internal recruitment strategy is reportedly more focused on bolstering their attacking options, particularly following the departure of Gabriel Martinelli to Al-Hilal, with targets such as Kenan Yildiz and Eli Junior Kroupi under consideration.

Market valuation and competition for Kim

Should Bayern Munich decide to entertain offers, the Bavarian giants are expected to demand a fee in the region of €25 million. This valuation is seen as realistic given his status as a squad rotation option, though any deal faces complications regarding the player's reported salary of approximately €7 million per annum. Bayern management is expected to hold internal discussions with the defender in the coming weeks to clarify his long-term role.

Arsenal are not the only side tracking the defender's availability. Tottenham Hotspur, managed by Roberto De Zerbi, are also monitoring the situation as they look to address ongoing defensive inconsistencies. Aston Villa, alongside Serie A clubs AC Milan and Juventus, have also been identified as potential suitors. With multiple competitors in the market and Bayern's requirement for a replacement, any formal approach for the defender is likely to be deferred until the conclusion of the 2026-27 season.
