Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed that the club has officially ended its pursuit of Atlético Madrid striker Julián Alvarez, declaring the protracted summer transfer saga a matter of the past. Speaking in recent days following a high-profile feud between the two La Liga clubs, Laporta revealed that he has reconciled with his Atlético counterpart, Miguel Angel Gil Marin, effectively closing the door on any immediate attempt to lure the Argentina international to Catalonia.
During the summer window, Barcelona tabled an official bid reported to be worth €100 million for the 26-year-old, a move that triggered significant hostility from the capital club. Atlético Madrid’s leadership had publicly criticised Barcelona’s approach as lacking ethics, and CEO Gil Marin adamantly refused to sanction a sale to a direct league rival. Despite interest from Premier League champions Arsenal, who had hoped to secure the forward, Alvarez ultimately remained with Diego Simeone’s squad, having prioritised a move to Barcelona that never materialised.
Reconciliation and Strategic Shift
The tension that defined the relationship between the two clubs throughout the summer appears to have dissipated. “We met up and shared a hug,” Laporta told El Chiringuito. “We’ve certainly smoothed things over, and I believe everything is clear now.” Addressing the speculation directly, the president affirmed that the club's interest in Alvarez is no longer active. Sporting director Deco reinforced this stance at the Portugal Football Summit, stating, “Julián is in the past, we have to look ahead, and we are happy with the rest of the squad.”
Barcelona’s strategic priorities have subsequently shifted. With Raphinha excelling in a central attacking role and the club having secured the services of Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal earlier in the window, the technical staff are now reportedly turning their attention toward reinforcing the squad with a left-sided centre-back. While Arsenal had tracked the forward throughout the summer, sources including BBC Sport indicate that the Gunners were aware of the player’s preference for a Spanish move and have since chosen to rely on their current attacking unit, keeping a watching brief on the market heading into the winter.
