Potential Ibrox Return Remains Long-Term Aspiration
Barry Ferguson has suggested that Rangers would likely need to meet a valuation of approximately €23 million (£20 million) if they are to pursue a deal for Bologna midfielder Lewis Ferguson. The former Ibrox captain and current columnist, speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, indicated that Bologna’s firm stance on the 27-year-old Scotland international is driven by his remaining contract length, which currently runs until 2028 with an option for an additional year.
While Barry Ferguson described a potential return to Ibrox as a personal ambition for the player, he acknowledged the significant financial hurdles involved. "I would reckon Bologna will want a chunky transfer fee for him because I think he's still got two years left on his contract," he stated. He added that the Italian club would likely seek the aforementioned figure given the security of the midfielder's current deal.
Player Confirms Long-Term Ambition
Lewis Ferguson, who has established himself as a prominent figure in Serie A since his 2022 move from Aberdeen, has publicly confirmed his desire to represent Rangers at some stage in his career. The midfielder, who was released by the Glasgow club as a youth player, reiterated that his childhood dream of playing for his boyhood team remains intact. However, he clarified that a potential transfer was not close during the recent summer window.
"I had a long think after the World Cup and a bit of time on holiday where I thought about my future," Ferguson told reporters during the international break. "I was a little bit unsure but nothing was ever really that close to be honest. When I went back to pre-season with Bologna, we had a new manager and it was like a fresh start again." He stressed that despite his long-term feelings towards the club, his current focus remains entirely on his professional commitments in Italy.
Market Context and Valuation
The estimated valuation of €23 million provides a baseline for potential future discussions, though this figure sits higher than other market metrics. Independent data, including the FootballTransfers Estimated Transfer Value (ETV), currently places the player at approximately €14 million. This discrepancy reflects the gap between statistical valuation and the premium selling clubs often place on key assets tied to long-term contracts. The Bologna midfielder has been a consistent performer, playing every minute of the club's opening five Serie A fixtures in the 2026/27 campaign, maintaining a professional respect for his current employers that currently precludes any active agitation for a move.
