Brighton Manager Fabian Hürzeler Identified As Candidate For Manchester United Post

Manchester United are reportedly monitoring Brighton & Hove Albion boss Fabian Hürzeler as a potential successor to Michael Carrick, though the club currently retains faith in their incumbent manager.

Management Uncertainty at Old Trafford

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Hürzeler has emerged as a potential candidate for the Manchester United vacancy should the club choose to part ways with Michael Carrick. According to reports in The Sun, the 33-year-old is considered a standout managerial option within the Premier League hierarchy, although Manchester United are officially maintaining their support for Carrick as he navigates his first full season at Old Trafford.

United have faced a challenging start to the domestic campaign, currently sitting 13th in the Premier League table after securing only six points from their opening six matches. Their solitary league victory arrived against Ipswich Town, a result that has done little to mitigate broader concerns regarding the team's trajectory. Despite significant investment during the summer transfer window, including the arrivals of Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans, and Andrey Santos, performance levels have failed to stabilise.

The pressure on Carrick has intensified following recent results, including an elimination from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Brighton and a 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid. This recent sequence has extended the club's winless streak to five matches across all competitions, heightening the scrutiny surrounding the manager's position.

Hürzeler’s Profile and Contract Situation

Any potential pursuit of Hürzeler would present financial complexities for the Manchester United board. The manager signed a new three-year contract with Brighton in June, which would necessitate a significant compensation package to secure his release from the Amex Stadium. While United are currently standing by Carrick, the identification of Hürzeler reflects their ongoing assessment of the managerial market.

Hürzeler has made an immediate impression during his tenure on the south coast. Since arriving in 2024, he has guided Brighton to four victories from six league matches this season, positioning the side in third place. His domestic success includes a notable track record against his potential future employers, with Brighton defeating United four times across six meetings during his time at the club.

The Manchester United leadership is understood to have monitored Hürzeler's progress for some time, with the club previously exploring other coaching profiles such as Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner last year. However, those targets eventually moved elsewhere, with Iraola joining Liverpool and Glasner taking charge at Nottingham Forest. Other names, including Antonio Conte, Kieran McKenna, and Eddie Howe, have also been cited as potential alternatives in the event that the club decides a managerial change is required. For now, the situation remains speculative, with the club focused on supporting the current coaching staff through the immediate schedule.
