Bruno Guimarães scored his first goal for Arsenal during a dramatic 2-0 victory against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, responding to hostile taunts from the home crowd.
According to FootballTransfers, the 28-year-old Brazil international, who joined Arsenal from Newcastle United in August 2026 for a reported €87.4 million (£75 million), has had an injury-disrupted start to his career under Mikel Arteta. However, he made a decisive impact after coming on as a half-time substitute for Myles Lewis-Skelly on Wearside.
Guimarães opened his goalscoring account just 121 seconds after Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya saved an Enzo Le Fée penalty. After finding the top corner, the midfielder ran toward the Sunderland supporters and cupped his ears. The home fans had targeted him with "fat rat" chants due to his four-and-a-half-year association with their local rivals, Newcastle United.
Following the final whistle, Guimarães posted on his Instagram stories: "They know what they are! The fat rat wishes you a nice weekend."
Speaking to BBC Sport, Guimarães expressed his delight: "It was unbelievable, I feel very good. Everyone knows I had a difficult start through injuries in my short time. But I'm glad to be back and glad to play."
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised the midfielder's crucial contribution: "Beautiful, he came on, the goal, the assist, remarkable. That's why we talk about the finishers and making that impact and being able to support and help the team. He was outstanding."
The victory kept Arsenal's perfect start to the 2026-27 season intact, having won all six of their opening games, including the Community Shield. According to BBC Sport, the result also marked Arsenal's ninth consecutive Premier League victory, matching their longest winning run since March 2004.
The Premier League champions will return to action on Tuesday evening when they travel to face Ipswich Town in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
