Chelsea's planned deadline-day transfer for AS Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara has collapsed despite a £47 million fee being agreed, leaving the Premier League club without a key midfield target. The 22-year-old Senegal international had already completed a medical and agreed personal terms on a contract until 2033, but the French club pulled out of the transaction late in the window after securing funds elsewhere.
How Monaco's Everton deal scuppered the move
The transfer was derailed after Monaco successfully renegotiated the sale of striker Folarin Balogun to Everton. With Balogun's departure generating the necessary revenue, Monaco leadership decided they no longer needed to sanction Camara's exit. Speaking on the late decision, Monaco director Thiago Scuro confirmed: "What happened was that around 22:00 BST our time, maybe a bit earlier, Everton realised there was no issue and decided they were ready to sign the contract. As soon as we received that information, we came back to Chelsea and said there was no deal."
The late reversal has caused a major rift between the clubs. Journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that Chelsea officials were left "completely furious" after having a medical underway, adding that "the relationship, Chelsea-Monaco, I think from tonight, is completely broken."
Alonso's midfield problem and Liverpool links
The collapse leaves Chelsea short of depth in central midfield, particularly as Enzo Fernandez edged closer to a transfer to Manchester City. Manager Xabi Alonso must now rely on Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Reece James, Valentin Barco, and Jordan Henderson until the market reopens in January.
Reports have subsequently linked Liverpool with a future move for Camara in 2027. However, journalist Ben Jacobs has downplayed those claims, stating he was told to advise the player's camp to wait because "Liverpool don't want Lamine Camara. Now, they never explored it." Any move from rival clubs is highly unlikely to materialise before 2027, leaving Camara to continue his development in Ligue 1 for the foreseeable future.
