Chelsea’s summer transfer business has left them short in key areas following a 2-1 defeat against Arsenal. Speaking on Sky Sports, pundit Gary Neville criticised the club's defensive structure and highlighted their failure to replace midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who completed a £125m British-record deadline day move to Manchester City.
"The back three, when I watch them, it's almost like their legs aren't connected to their hips and the hips aren't connected to their bodies. It's almost like they're a bit all over the place,"
Neville commented, identifying the central defensive unit as a major point of concern for Chelsea's sporting directors.
Defensive woes and midfield imbalance
Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso, who was appointed in May, admitted after the match that the team must search for defensive solutions. However, he cautioned that building defensive cohesion will require patience. The structural issues are exacerbated by a lack of protection from midfield. On deadline day, Chelsea sanctioned the sale of Fernandez to rivals Manchester City and subsequently saw a €55m deal to sign midfielder Lamine Camara from AS Monaco collapse at the final hour. Moises Caicedo's inability to feature against Arsenal left Chelsea's engine room significantly depleted.
The January rebuilding plan
Having failed to secure Camara late in the summer window, Chelsea's recruitment team will likely have to wait until the January transfer window to address these obvious structural gaps. Neville noted to Metro News that "Enzo hasn’t really been replaced" and that the squad is "a little short in midfield". Finding a disciplined, defensive-minded midfielder to anchor the side alongside Caicedo remains a priority, while the central defensive unit requires an injection of experienced leadership to stabilise Alonso's preferred back-three system.
