Chelsea Weigh Up Move For Real Madrid's Trent Alexander-Arnold

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has approved the evaluation of a potential deal for Trent Alexander-Arnold, with Real Madrid reportedly open to listening to offers for the defender.

Chelsea Explore Right-Back Options

Chelsea are assessing the possibility of signing Trent Alexander-Arnold, with manager Xabi Alonso having internally approved the pursuit of the 28-year-old. While no formal bid or advanced negotiations have been confirmed between the clubs, the interest represents an early step in Chelsea’s efforts to bolster their defensive options. According to reporting by FootballTransfers and Simon Phillips, the London club are monitoring the England international as he navigates a peripheral role in the Spanish capital.

Alexander-Arnold joined Real Madrid in June 2025 but has struggled to command a regular starting berth under José Mourinho. In the 2026/27 campaign, the former Liverpool defender has been limited to six appearances across all competitions, contributing one assist. Mourinho’s tactical preference has frequently seen midfielder Federico Valverde deployed at right-back, further restricting Alexander-Arnold’s involvement.

Contractual Standing and Market Context

Although Alexander-Arnold remains under contract with Real Madrid until June 2031, sources indicate that the club may be open to entertaining enquiries for the defender should a suitable offer be presented. Real Madrid are under no financial pressure to sanction a sale given the longevity of his current deal, and the player is not being actively shopped to other teams. Despite this, the defender is understood to be reflecting on his future as he seeks more consistent playing time.

Chelsea’s interest is partly driven by the recent injury to captain Reece James. The 26-year-old defender is currently sidelined following knee surgery, with an estimated recovery period of three months. While Xabi Alonso has utilized Malo Gusto and Marco Palestra, and occasionally deployed Pedro Neto in wider defensive roles, the club is keeping a close watch on high-calibre reinforcements to maintain their competitive depth.

Wider Premier League Interest

The situation has not gone unnoticed elsewhere, with a cluster of top Premier League clubs reportedly tracking developments. Alongside Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City are credited with maintaining interest in the defender’s status. A potential return to Liverpool, his boyhood club, remains a topic of speculation, though the Anfield side is currently managing its own defensive transition under manager Andoni Iraola.

Liverpool’s own right-back situation remains unresolved. While they have secured Ronald Araujo on loan from Barcelona—with an option to purchase for approximately €55m—the club continues to assess its long-term defensive strategy. Previous links to Chelsea’s Malo Gusto also highlight the wider scramble for proven full-backs among elite clubs. As the January transfer window approaches, competition for Alexander-Arnold appears likely, though both Chelsea and other interested parties are currently in the assessment phase, waiting for more clarity on his involvement under Mourinho before formalising any potential pursuit.
