Christian Kofane has paused negotiations regarding a new contract extension at Bayer Leverkusen, a development that has triggered renewed interest from several Premier League clubs. According to reporting by Sport BILD and corroborated by Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, the 20-year-old striker has independently halted discussions on a deal that would have secured his future at the Bundesliga club until 2031. The forward is not actively seeking an immediate departure, but the impasse signals a clear shift in his contractual requirements.
The Contractual Impasse
Negotiations between Kofane and Bayer Leverkusen, overseen by sporting director Simon Rolfes, were initially expected to reach a formal conclusion in mid-September. The proposed framework, which would have extended the Cameroon international's stay beyond his current 2029 expiry, reportedly included an increase in annual salary to approximately €4 million. However, after reviewing the terms drafted by his agency, Afrosport, with external advisors, Kofane elected to stop the process. Reports from Sport BILD indicate that the disagreement centers specifically on the signing bonus associated with the new agreement rather than his base salary or the inclusion of a release clause.
Kofane, who arrived at the BayArena from Spanish side Albacete in July 2025 for a fee exceeding his then-€5 million release clause, has maintained his professional commitment to his current representation. The decision to delay signifies that the player is re-evaluating the financial structure of his deal in light of his significant development. Leverkusen now face a strategic decision regarding whether to adjust the signing bonus to finalize the extension or allow the current standoff to persist while external pressure from English clubs mounts.
Premier League Interest and Strategic Fit
The uncertainty surrounding Kofane’s contract has alerted several Premier League teams. Reports state that Arsenal have been in contact with the striker’s management since the spring of 2026. Meanwhile, Manchester United have reportedly made more recent inquiries to gauge the player’s interest in a potential move to England. Both clubs have been active in the forward market; Arsenal recently added Christos Tzolis to their attacking ranks in a deal worth €40 million from Club Brugge, while Manchester United opted to retain Joshua Zirkzee to complement Benjamin Sesko in their central attacking rotation.
Beyond the primary interest from London and Manchester, BILD reports that Newcastle United, Aston Villa, and Everton have also monitored the forward’s situation, having previously seen approaches for him turned down in August 2026. Kofane’s performances have justified this high level of attention. After recording seven goals in 44 appearances during his debut Bundesliga campaign, he has continued his output this season, netting three times in six appearances. This efficiency in front of goal, combined with his relative age and physical profile, makes him a highly sought-after commodity in the current market.
Leverkusen's Position and Valuation
Bayer Leverkusen remain in a position of leverage, as Kofane’s current contract runs until June 2029. The club is reported to value the striker in the range of €60 million to €70 million, a figure that reflects both his rapid ascension under manager C. Martínez Novell and the broader market scarcity of high-performing young forwards. While Leverkusen have expressed a clear desire to formalize his long-term future, the player’s decision to reopen the financial negotiations demonstrates that the initial package no longer satisfies his requirements. With major English clubs waiting for clarity on his status, the coming weeks will determine if an improved offer can bridge the gap or if the contractual deadlock will lead to a transfer saga when the window reopens.
