Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has publicly advised the Gunners to prioritise a move for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, contending that the Nigeria international possesses a specific physical profile currently missing from Mikel Arteta’s squad. The recommendation arrives in the wake of Arsenal’s failure to secure Julian Alvarez, who completed a €75 million transfer to Atletico Madrid in August 2024.
A Distinctive Profile for Arsenal
Speaking to TEAMtalk, Petit emphasised the necessity of adding a more traditional, direct presence to the forward line, arguing that Osimhen would offer Mikel Arteta options that current personnel do not provide. "For me, he is the one. He has something different, he has a different profile to what Arsenal have at the moment. He’s powerful, he’s quick, he’s a killer in the box," the former France international stated.
Tactically, the addition of a high-output number nine would represent a departure from the current usage of Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus. Both players frequently operate as fluid forwards who drop deep to link play or initiate pressing cycles. While this approach has defined Arsenal’s offensive evolution, the team has occasionally struggled to break down deep-set, low-block defensive structures. A player of Osimhen’s stature would offer a more robust aerial threat and aggressive runs into the penalty area, potentially diversifying the attack during fixtures where possession-based play proves insufficient.
Market Realities and Squad Dynamics
The pursuit of an elite striker remains a complex financial endeavour for Arsenal, with salary expectations and league spending constraints serving as significant barriers. Osimhen, having failed to secure a permanent exit from Napoli during the summer window due to complications regarding his release clause and wage demands, completed a season-long loan move to Galatasaray on 4 September 2024.
While Arsenal’s interest in the player remains speculative following the close of the summer transfer window, the move to Turkey provides the 25-year-old with an immediate platform to maintain fitness. Whether the Gunners would look to trigger a mid-season approach to interrupt his spell at Galatasaray involves overcoming substantial logistical obstacles. Until then, Arteta is left to integrate his current options as the club navigates a challenging domestic and European calendar.
