Joao Mendes, son of Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho, has signed a one year contract with Hull City. The Championship side confirmed the move on Thursday, adding that the deal also carries the option of a one year extension.
The 20 year old forward is looking to establish himself in England after spending time in both Spain and Brazil during his early career. Mendes began in the youth system at Barcelona, where his father once dazzled the Camp Nou, before making the switch to Burnley in 2024. While he featured regularly for their Under 21 side, he was released earlier this year.
Mendes On His Football Journey
Speaking after the announcement, Mendes said he valued the experience of playing across different footballing cultures.
"I think it is good to be able to play in different styles of football," Mendes said. "In Brazil, it is one style, Spain is another one, and England is another one, so I think it complements your game really well if you have played at different places."
Mendes is expected to link up with Hull’s development squad initially, with opportunities to push towards the first team if he impresses.
Ronaldinho Shows His Support
Pride was clear from his famous father. Ronaldinho, a World Cup winner in 2002 and Ballon d’Or recipient in 2005, posted a message on Instagram along with a picture of his son holding a Hull City jersey.
"Good luck at your new club and challenge, my son," Ronaldinho wrote.
The post quickly drew attention from fans who remember Ronaldinho’s glittering career at Barcelona and beyond, now watching closely as his son takes the next step.
Hull’s Ambition With Young Talent
For Hull City, securing Mendes is part of their ongoing plan to invest in young talent. The club continues to seek players with potential to grow and add value in a competitive Championship season. Mendes arrives with a unique profile, not only because of his famous father but also because of his experience across multiple football environments at such a young age.
Hull’s coaching staff will be eager to see how Mendes adapts to the physical and tactical demands of English football. The one year contract with an option to extend provides a balance of opportunity and caution, giving both club and player a chance to assess progress.
A New Chapter In England
While Mendes has not yet made a major impact at senior level, his arrival in the Championship marks another important step in his development. English football has proven to be a difficult but rewarding stage for young South American talents, and Mendes will hope to carve his own path.
With Ronaldinho watching on proudly and Hull City offering him the platform, Mendes will look to show that he can thrive on his own merit. His journey from Brazil to Spain and now to England reflects a player determined to grow, and Hull may yet provide the environment he needs to succeed.
