Liverpool are actively engaged in contract renewal negotiations with Rio Ngumoha as the club looks to secure the long-term future of one of their most promising young talents. Despite sustained interest from clubs including Arsenal and Bayern Munich, Liverpool have maintained a firm stance that they will not sanction a sale, with the 18-year-old now firmly established within Andoni Iraola's first-team plans at Anfield.
Reports from The Daily Mail indicate that the player's representatives are currently locked in talks with the club hierarchy. The prevailing view among those close to the negotiations is that agreeing to fresh terms is a matter of time, rather than a point of uncertainty. Ngumoha, who joined from Chelsea’s academy in 2024, is currently under contract until 2028, but the club is eager to reward his rapid progress with improved terms commensurate with his senior status.
Speaking after Liverpool's recent 2-1 victory over Brentford, Ngumoha confirmed the process is being managed externally. "It's all with my agent now," he said. "I think it is all going well. I am not too sure. I just let the football do the talking at the end of the day. I enjoy playing and all of that stuff about contracts is in the back of my mind really. I just play for the club, play for Liverpool and hopefully I can carry on doing well."
Ngumoha’s integration into the senior squad has been swift, with the teenager having now accumulated 39 appearances for the club. His rise has been marked by significant milestones, including becoming the youngest Liverpool player to register an assist in the Champions League during a recent fixture against Villarreal. His international recognition has also grown, with the winger making his senior England debut earlier this year.
The competition for attacking spots at Anfield has intensified following the summer arrivals of Bradley Barcola and Victor Munoz. Under Iraola, Ngumoha has been encouraged to develop greater tactical versatility, frequently operating on the right flank to complement his natural position on the left. This tactical evolution is designed to enhance his unpredictability against defensive setups. Reflecting on this transition, Ngumoha noted the value of adapting his game. "I think [playing on the right] gives me a bit unpredictability," he explained. "If teams see me playing, they might think I am on the left but I can offer something different on the right. Training with the likes of Anthony Gordon and Bukayo Saka—they are top, top wingers—and seeing what they do, that can really help me."
The coaching staff’s emphasis remains on refining Ngumoha’s end product and defensive contribution, with Iraola actively pushing the player to improve his one-v-one capabilities. With negotiations progressing well, the club intends to finalise these terms before the current campaign concludes, ensuring the teenager remains a central part of their future project.
