Liverpool Secure Agreement For Saint-Étienne Forward Djylian N’Guessan

Liverpool have secured an agreement for 18-year-old forward Djylian N’Guessan, who will join from Saint-Étienne in summer 2027 for approximately €5 million.

Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign 18-year-old Saint-Étienne forward Djylian N’Guessan. The deal, which Fabrizio Romano confirmed as a "here we go" transaction on 31 August 2026, involves an initial fee understood to be in the region of €5 million. As part of the arrangement, the French youth international will remain with the Ligue 1 club for the duration of the current campaign, with his official arrival at Anfield scheduled for the summer of 2027. The club have already received authorization to conduct a medical for the player.

Long-term planning and squad integration

The acquisition of N’Guessan mirrors Liverpool’s recent strategy of securing high-potential youth talent well before their market value peaks, a tactic similar to the ongoing negotiations for Genk goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans. By deferring the arrival of the teenager until 2027, the club aims to ensure consistent senior playing time in France, a developmental pathway that contrasts with the immediate integration often expected of first-team signings like Bradley Barcola. This approach allows Liverpool to bolster their attacking depth without disrupting the equilibrium of the current squad overseen by manager Andoni Iraola.

Tactical implications and future roster turnover

This forward-planning exercise comes at a time when the club is managing its long-term attacking composition. With the futures of established forwards such as Cody Gakpo subject to ongoing speculation, N’Guessan represents a proactive move to secure a prospect capable of filling a vacancy in the attacking rotation years down the line. The moderate financial outlay carries significantly less risk than traditional first-team purchases, providing a stable foundation for the academy-to-senior pipeline. While N’Guessan is currently viewed as a developmental asset, the next twelve months in Ligue 1 will prove vital in determining whether he is ready for a direct transition into the Liverpool setup upon his eventual arrival.

The club is expected to finalise the outstanding administrative details of the transfer in the coming days.
