Lothar Matthäus has identified Chelsea as a potential future destination for Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz, should the 23-year-old’s form at Anfield fail to improve. The former Bayern Munich captain, writing in his column for Sky Germany on 13 October 2026, suggested that Wirtz may eventually need to seek a new challenge if he cannot regain the rhythm that previously defined his Bundesliga career. Matthäus emphasised that his comments were based on the current landscape of the transfer market rather than any concrete interest or negotiations from the Stamford Bridge hierarchy.
Matthäus's Assessment of the Forward's Future
Matthäus, speaking on the broader speculation surrounding the Germany international, categorically ruled out a move to Bayern Munich. He pointed to the established attacking options already available to Vincent Kompany as the primary obstacle, noting that the Bavarians' recruitment strategy remains focused on maintaining their current core. “When I look at Bayern Munich’s attacking options, Kane, Olise and Díaz are established starters, while Musiala and Gnabry are also top-quality players,” Matthäus wrote. “I simply don’t see any realistic short-term possibility of bringing him to Bayern Munich.”
Instead, the former midfielder posited that Chelsea could represent a logical alternative. The suggestion leans heavily on the presence of Xabi Alonso, who is currently in charge at Stamford Bridge and previously managed Wirtz during their shared tenure at Bayer Leverkusen. Matthäus argued that a reunion with a coach who understands the player's specific tactical profile could provide the necessary environment for a resurgence, particularly if Wirtz continues to struggle with the physical and stylistic demands of the Premier League.
Chelsea's Current Recruitment Strategy
While the prospect of a reunion with Alonso is stylistically intuitive, there is no evidence of active interest from Chelsea in securing Wirtz's signature. The club’s recent recruitment strategy has been characterised by a significant financial outlay on attacking talent, including the acquisition of Morgan Rogers. Reports from within the industry have highlighted Chelsea’s substantial investment in the squad during the summer, with the club spending €138m to overhaul their forward options. Rogers has integrated into the starting XI quickly, occupying a creative role that would overlap with the position Wirtz typically prefers.
Furthermore, Chelsea are widely understood to be shifting their strategic priorities for the coming windows. Recruitment staff are thought to be focusing on the evolution of deeper central midfield roles to provide better balance, rather than adding further depth to the attacking line. Wirtz remains on a long-term contract at Anfield, a factor that grants Liverpool significant leverage should the club opt to retain him. Without a formal approach, a change in Liverpool’s long-term planning, or an indication of desire from the player’s representatives, the speculation remains entirely external. Any potential transfer would require a significant shift in Chelsea’s current squad construction and a departure from the recruitment focus established during their 2026 summer activity.
