Manchester United have been handed a fresh opportunity to reignite their interest in Inter Milan left-back Federico Dimarco due to ongoing uncertainty surrounding his contract extension. According to a report by FootballTransfers, the Red Devils are closely monitoring the 28-year-old Italy international, whom they previously targeted in March.
The contract situation has become a source of frustration. Speaking at the Gran Gala del Calcio, Dimarco expressed his surprise at the lack of immediate talks, stating:
After what I did last year, I would have expected the club to call me about my contract.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, these comments prompted face-to-face discussions. Inter's new sporting director, Dario Baccin, who recently replaced the departing Piero Ausilio after his 28-year tenure, met with Dimarco's agent, Arturo Canales, in Madrid for a constructive, clear-the-air meeting.
However, securing an extension remains complicated. Under owners Oaktree, Inter are focused on trimming their overall payroll. This policy involves offering older squad members highly incentivised contracts featuring lower guaranteed base salaries. Dimarco currently earns a net salary of €4 million per season, equivalent to a gross annual wage of €7.41 million. Since his next deal is likely to be the last major contract of his career, negotiations could face hurdles if he is asked to take a guaranteed pay cut.
Dimarco's current contract runs until June 2027, and Inter hold a unilateral option to extend it by an additional year. Although Inter are keen to tie the defender down to a long-term deal until 2030, a failure to reach an agreement could see him become a viable target for other clubs. Reports suggest a valuation between €45 million and €60 million could tempt the Italian side if talks collapse completely.
Manchester United are looking to bolster their left-back options, where Luke Shaw has battled ongoing fitness concerns. While United kept their powder dry in the summer after being told Newcastle's Lewis Hall was unavailable, Hall's subsequent contract renewal has forced them to assess other targets, including Bournemouth's Adrien Truffert and potentially Dimarco.
