According to reporting from TEAMtalk, the 29-year-old has emerged as a potential target, with representatives of the player having reportedly initiated contact to gauge United’s interest.
United's pursuit of further reinforcements comes after a difficult start to the 2026/27 season, with Michael Carrick’s side currently sitting 12th in the Premier League table after collecting five points from their opening five fixtures. The club's attacking depth has been impacted by recurring fitness issues for Benjamin Sesko, leaving United short of options in the final third. The club’s recruitment focus follows a summer period where substantial capital was directed toward midfield overhaul, with the acquisitions of Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos, and Youri Tielemans.
Contract situation and Crystal Palace stance
Mateta’s contractual status remains a complex matter, though he is currently tied to Crystal Palace until June 2027. Speaking on the situation, manager Oliver Glasner stated: "There will be a price that Crystal Palace [accept], with 18 months left on his contract. We'd do the deal, if JP wants. If nobody pays that price, then he will stay."
