Chelsea’s dramatic deadline-day search for midfield reinforcement culminated in two collapsed deals, including a proposed €70m (£60m) move for Roma midfielder Manu Kone that reportedly featured a personal endorsement from Kylian Mbappe to Blues manager Xabi Alonso. Following the British-record-equalling £125m sale of Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City, Chelsea attempted late moves for Kone and Monaco’s Lamine Camara, both of which fell through in the final hours of the transfer window.
Midfield shortages mount after Enzo Fernandez exit
The departure of Fernandez left Alonso’s squad severely depleted in central midfield, particularly with Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia sidelined through injury. Speaking on his move to Manchester City, Fernandez said: "If you look across the squad, City have quality in every area. I want to learn from my new teammates and become a better player." The loss of the Argentine forced Chelsea into the market, having already used full-back Malo Gusto in midfield against Brighton due to selection shortages. Late moves for Monaco's Camara and Roma's Kone were designed to address this vulnerability, but the pursuit of Kone collapsed late on deadline day because the Italian club were unable to secure a replacement in time.
The Mbappe endorsement and Chelsea's recruitment process
According to reports originating from Foot Mercato, and subsequently carried by Metro and Goal, Alonso consulted Mbappe regarding Kone's suitability before launching the €70m bid. The Real Madrid forward reportedly gave a glowing review of his international teammate, convincing the Chelsea head coach to push ahead with the deal. However, this direct consultation between Alonso and Mbappe remains unconfirmed by primary club sources. While elite managers occasionally use international networks to gauge player character, Chelsea's recruitment department ultimately had to pivot away when Roma pulled the plug, leaving Alonso to navigate the autumn schedule with a thin midfield roster.
