Félix Tainta, the agent representing Nico Williams, has confirmed that Arsenal were one of several elite European clubs to formalise interest in the Athletic Club winger during the 2024 transfer window. The disclosure, made on the 'Los Fulanos' podcast and subsequently reported by Marca, clarifies the scale of the pursuit for the 24-year-old following his prominent role in Spain’s success at the 2024 European Championship.
A Retrospective Scramble for Talent
Tainta revealed that the list of interested parties was extensive, spanning the continent’s biggest clubs. Alongside Arsenal, the agent confirmed that Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Paris Saint-Germain all registered varying degrees of interest. The intensity of the scramble reflected Williams' profile at the time, particularly given his direct style of play and decisive performances at the international level. For Arsenal, the approach was aligned with their ongoing strategy to secure high-ceiling attacking talent capable of operating on the flanks, though the player ultimately remained in Bilbao.
Registration Anxiety and the 'F1' Analogy
The core of the failed move to Barcelona—which had been widely touted as the most likely destination—was rooted in financial viability. According to Tainta, the impasse was not about personal terms or a lack of desire, but rather a lack of guarantees regarding the club’s ability to register the player within La Liga’s financial framework. Tainta, describing his client as an "F1 car," emphasised that he could not allow Williams to risk his career development on the uncertainty surrounding Barcelona's squad registration.
"I go to your house to practice my profession; I have to continue doing my profession, and if you have a problem, that shouldn't affect me," Tainta explained on the podcast. With a World Cup approaching at the time, the requirement for consistent playing time took precedence over the prestige of any single destination, leading to the collapse of the Catalan option.
Arsenal’s Evolving Attacking Strategy
While Arsenal’s historical interest is confirmed, the landscape of their attacking recruitment has shifted significantly in the period since. The club continues to operate with a focus on bolstering their forward line, particularly in the left-wing position. However, the pursuit of Williams is now considered a chapter closed by the realities of the market and the player's long-term commitment to his current club. Recruitment teams at Arsenal have since pivoted toward alternative profiles, with names such as Juventus' Kenan Yildiz and Brentford's Kevin Schade appearing in broader scouting reports, as the club balances squad depth with Financial Fair Play and Profitability and Sustainability Rule constraints.
The Financial Barrier of a 2035 Renewal
Any speculation regarding a future move for Williams is effectively neutralised by the contract extension he signed with Athletic Club in July 2025. This deal ties him to the club until June 30, 2035, a decade-long commitment that serves as a cornerstone of the club’s sporting project. Furthermore, the renewal triggered a substantial increase in his release clause—estimated to be at least 50% higher than the previous figure of approximately €60m, placing it well into the region of €90m. This valuation, combined with the extreme length of the agreement, represents a significant hurdle for any buying club, confirming that any potential transfer would require a capital commitment far beyond standard market fluctuations. Williams’ focus remains on Athletic, as the club continues to build a generational squad around his contributions.
