RedBird Capital In Talks For Al-Nassr Stake As PIF Works To Clear Club Debt

A RedBird-led consortium is in preliminary talks to acquire a 70% stake in Al-Nassr, with the PIF working to settle $213m in club debt ahead of a potential sale.

Preliminary Talks for Majority Stake

A consortium led by RedBird Capital Partners has entered early-stage negotiations to acquire a 70% stake in Al-Nassr, according to reports in Semafor. The discussions, involving at least two meetings between RedBird representatives and the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), form part of the Saudi state’s wider mandate to privatise its leading football clubs. To facilitate this transition, the PIF is actively working to resolve approximately $213 million (SAR 800 million) in existing club debt, primarily through orchestrated corporate sponsorship agreements within its portfolio. While negotiations are ongoing, sources caution that a final agreement is not guaranteed and terms remain subject to change.

The Shift to Private Ownership

The potential sale follows the established roadmap for the Saudi Pro League, where the PIF is moving state-backed teams toward commercial self-sufficiency. In September 2026, the PIF successfully divested a 70% stake in Al-Hilal to Kingdom Holding Company. The current valuation discussion for the proposed 70% stake in Al-Nassr is reported at approximately $267 million (SAR 1 billion), which would imply an overall equity valuation of roughly $381 million. The PIF’s strategy of cleaning the balance sheet is viewed as a prerequisite for attracting external private investment, moving the club away from direct state-led capital injections.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Potential Role

Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to feature in the proposed ownership structure, with reports suggesting he could take a 20% stake in the club. While his precise involvement remains part of ongoing discussions, the forward's potential entry into the ownership group is viewed by the consortium as a significant commercial asset. Ronaldo currently holds a 25% stake in the Spanish second-division side UD Almeria, a venture linked to the Saudi Media Company (SMC), which has also been identified as a potential participant in the Al-Nassr consortium. The involvement of such partners underscores a desire to localise management and leverage established media assets.

RedBird’s Strategic Ecosystem

For RedBird Capital Partners, the addition of Al-Nassr to its portfolio would mark a significant expansion of its global sports interests. The firm currently owns AC Milan, where R. Amorim serves as head coach, and French club Toulouse FC, in addition to holding a minority interest in Fenway Sports Group. Integrating the Saudi club into this network could offer operational synergies regarding commercial partnerships and scouting pathways. Industry observers note that the recruitment model for Saudi clubs is increasingly pivoting toward high-potential younger assets, moving away from exclusive reliance on veteran stars. Finalising the debt resolution remains the primary hurdle for the PIF before any formal privatisation agreement can be concluded as the Saudi Pro League continues its wider restructuring.
