PSV Eindhoven striker Ricardo Pepi has spoken about the disappointment surrounding his collapsed transfer to Fulham, revealing how he used the setback as motivation for the new season. As reported by FootballTransfers, the 23-year-old United States international was on the verge of joining the Premier League club in March after a transfer package worth around €40 million was agreed between the two teams.
Pepi travelled to London to undergo a medical and tour the club's facilities, but the transfer fell through late in the process. The disagreement centered on when financial responsibility for the player would officially transfer. PSV had reportedly demanded that Fulham assume responsibility from the moment of the agreement in March rather than the start of the summer window, leading the Premier League side to back out of negotiations.
"Fuel to Come Out Even Stronger"
Reflecting on the breakdown of the move, Pepi admitted the period was a difficult one. "That was not an easy period," Pepi told Dutch national broadcaster NOS. "Not only for me, but also for my family. They have been there for me my whole life, and everyone was disappointed. However, everything happens for a reason. Ultimately, I used that as fuel to come out of it even stronger."
The striker has remained focused on his role with PSV, where he has registered 39 goals in 96 competitive appearances since his permanent move in the summer of 2023. Pepi, whose contract runs until June 2030, has started every game this season except for the Johan Cruijff Schaal defeat against AZ Alkmaar in August.
Fulham Move in Another Direction
Fulham have since seen a change of leadership, with Álvaro Arbeloa appointed head coach in July on a three-year contract, succeeding Marco Silva. Instead of reviving interest in Pepi, the West London club pursued other targets, ultimately signing forward Gonzalo García, who had previously worked with the Spanish coach at Real Madrid.
Pepi has previously drawn interest from other Premier League sides, such as Everton and West Ham United. However, the striker remains settled at PSV. Reflecting on his future in a previous interview with Voetbal International, Pepi said: "Of course, at the moment I’m still with PSV, so as of now, I’m still back next year. We’ll see what happens. I’m really focused on finishing the season strongly and then seeing what comes up in the summer."
