Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi is the subject of intense speculation regarding his future at the club following a winless start to the Premier League season, despite a massive summer transfer outlay exceeding £300m. Reports from FootballTransfers and Football Insider suggest that the Italian's growing public frustrations have fueled rumours of an early departure, just weeks after the conclusion of a highly active transfer window.
De Zerbi's public frustration and early form
Tottenham have endured a difficult start to the campaign, failing to win or score in their opening three Premier League fixtures against Brentford, Newcastle United, and Nottingham Forest. Following a 0-0 draw against Forest, De Zerbi did not hide his disappointment. Speaking to reporters, the Italian manager stressed the need for composure, stating: "In the final third we have to improve. We have to improve and take better decisions, keep calmer when we are close to doing something important." Despite the pressure, De Zerbi defended his squad, adding: "I have a big, big confidence in the qualities of my players. This group with me or with another coach, nothing changed because these players are too good."
Heavy summer backing demands patience
The slow start stands in stark contrast to Tottenham's extensive summer recruitment, with spending figures reported between £313m and £389m. Major additions included midfielder Sandro Tonali for £100m, Mateus Fernandes for £85m, and winger Savinho for £85m, offset partly by the departure of Cristian Romero to Atletico Madrid. Speaking on the Football Insider Inside Track podcast, former Everton CEO Keith Wyness suggested that this level of financial backing should buy the manager time. Wyness stated: "I don't think we're going to be talking about De Zerbi having a problem. I think this investment is going to protect him enough to give him enough time to get this squad working." The club board is understood to remain patient, viewing the squad rebuild as a long-term project.
