Manchester United are working to secure the long-term future of 15-year-old academy prospect JJ Gabriel, who has drawn heavy interest from domestic rivals Chelsea and several European heavyweights. Former United winger Ryan Giggs has publicly urged the club to retain the attacker, whom he described as a "generational talent" who must not be allowed to depart Old Trafford.
The battle for Gabriel's signature
According to reports by TEAMtalk, Chelsea are monitoring Gabriel's situation closely, alongside Premier League counterparts Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, and Liverpool. Furthermore, European giants Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Borussia Dortmund have tracked the teenager since the age of 13. To protect their asset, United are preparing to offer Gabriel scholarship terms when he turns 16 in October, alongside a pre-contract agreement for a professional contract. Under domestic regulations, English clubs cannot formally register players on professional contracts until they turn 17, leaving United vulnerable to external approaches during this transition phase.
A record-breaking rise at Old Trafford
Gabriel's rapid ascent has made him one of the most highly regarded prospects in English youth football. He became the youngest player to feature for Manchester United's Under-18 side at just 14 years old in January 2025, and later made his senior pre-season debut against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm. Now the top scorer in the U18 Premier League, his retention is crucial for United’s academy strategy, particularly after they successfully recruited 16-year-old forward Chido Obi from Arsenal. Giggs insisted that Gabriel must remain at Old Trafford, stating: "He’s got to stay. There’s no point in going out on loan because he’s at the best place and he’d be dipping in and out of the first team. So that experience is invaluable."
