Sporting CP Move to Secure Defender
Sporting CP have initiated formal negotiations to extend the contract of Iván Fresneda, with the Portuguese club looking to tie the 22-year-old down to a new agreement. According to reports in Portugal, Sporting president Frederico Varandas has accelerated discussions with the player’s representatives to secure his long-term future in Lisbon. Fresneda, who joined the club in 2023, is currently under contract until 2028, but the club is eager to formalise new terms that reflect his increased stature within the squad.
This renewed contract push comes as Fresneda attracts fresh attention from elite European clubs, with Arsenal and Barcelona both credited with interest in the full-back. The defender’s reputation has significantly increased following his maiden call-up to the Spain senior national team in September 2026, where he was drafted in as an injury replacement for Pedro Porro. While Fresneda has not yet made his senior debut, his rising profile has made him a priority for the Sporting leadership, who are aiming to finalize a deal before the next transfer window opens to safeguard his market value.
Arsenal and Barcelona Monitoring Progress
Arsenal have rekindled their pursuit of the right-back after previously exploring a move during his time at Real Valladolid. The Gunners, managed by Mikel Arteta, are reportedly maintaining a watching brief on Fresneda as they plan for potential future adjustments in their defensive unit. Although Arsenal currently rely on Ben White and Jurrien Timber, the 22-year-old’s tactical profile—noted for his ability to contribute in possession and his defensive one-on-one capabilities—remains of interest to the club's recruitment team.
Barcelona are similarly attentive to the defender’s progress. The Catalan club has historically tracked the Madrid-born player since his development in La Liga and continues to assess options to reinforce the right-back position. Any potential move for Fresneda, however, remains complicated by his existing €80 million release clause. While Sporting aim to extend his contract terms until 2031, no formal bids have yet been confirmed by either interested party. The upcoming winter transfer market is expected to clarify whether the ongoing monitoring from these elite suitors will materialise into concrete approaches or if the player will commit to an extended tenure at the Estádio José Alvalade.
