Manchester United’s failure to secure a left-back and a fully fit striker during the transfer window has left manager Michael Carrick with a severely compromised squad, according to former captain Wayne Rooney. Failed targets leave Carrick short at left-back
According to reports from the BBC and the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United active pursued multiple left-back targets to provide competition for Luke Shaw, whose injury history remains a persistent concern. Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall emerged as the primary target, but negotiations stalled over his high valuation. United also enquired about Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde, only to be rebuffed as the Spanish club favoured a permanent sale rather than a loan. A loan enquiry for Rayan Ait-Nouri similarly collapsed after Manchester City demanded an obligation-to-buy clause. These failures left Carrick relying on right-backs Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui to fill the void, a tactical compromise Rooney heavily criticised as putting players in unfamiliar roles.
Striker shortage exposes reliance on Sesko
The depth issues extend to the front line, where United are overly reliant on Benjamin Sesko. As reported by Football365, Rooney pointed out that Sesko’s lack of pre-season training has severely limited his fitness, exposing the lack of alternative central striking options. United had drawn up a shortlist of experienced forwards to ease the burden on Sesko, but financial complexities prevented any deals from materialising. Pursuits of Inter Milan’s Pio Esposito and Napoli forward Victor Osimhen—currently at Galatasaray—fell through due to high costs, whilst Goncalo Ramos opted for a move to AC Milan. This has left Carrick with minimal options upfront, meaning the club will almost certainly have to prioritise central attacking reinforcements in the January window.
