Chelsea are planning a January move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Pablo Barrios, following Enzo Fernandez's departure to Manchester City. According to multiple reports, the Premier League club is prepared to test Atletico's resolve with a €100 million (£85.6 million) offer. This interest comes after Chelsea failed in their late summer efforts to sign Monaco's Lamine Camara, leaving manager Xabi Alonso light in central midfield options. Alonso reportedly views Barrios as the perfect tactical partner for Moises Caicedo.
However, completing a deal in the winter window will be exceptionally difficult. Barrios is under a long-term contract with Atletico Madrid until June 2030, and his current deal is protected by a massive €500 million release clause. Backed by Apollo Sports Capital, the Spanish club is under no financial duress to sell one of their brightest academy graduates mid-season. Any progress on this deal will require Chelsea to initiate formal club-to-club talks, convince Atletico to negotiate well below the release clause, and agree personal terms with the player. Currently, no official bid has been submitted.
