Andoni Iraola Emerges As Leading Chelsea Candidate As Nicolas Jackson Returns From Bayern

Andoni Iraola is a leading candidate for the Chelsea job as Nicolas Jackson prepares to return to Stamford Bridge following Bayern Munich's refusal to sign him.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has emerged as a primary candidate to succeed Liam Rosenior at Chelsea, a move that could fundamentally shift the future of Nicolas Jackson. The 24-year-old forward is set to return to Stamford Bridge this summer after Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl confirmed the German club will not exercise their €65 million purchase option. While Juventus and AC Milan are reportedly monitoring Jackson’s situation, the potential appointment of Iraola — who has previously identified the striker as a high-calibre talent — suggests a path toward reintegration in London rather than a permanent exit.

The Iraola factor and Chelsea’s shortlist

According to reports in the Evening Standard and FootballTransfers, Iraola features on a three-man shortlist alongside Xabi Alonso and Marco Silva. The 43-year-old has already confirmed his intention to leave Bournemouth at the expiry of his contract this June, with Marco Rose already named as his successor at the Vitality Stadium. Iraola’s tactical suitability is bolstered by his long-standing admiration for Jackson, having scouted and faced him during their shared time in La Liga while Iraola was at Rayo Vallecano. Speaking previously on the forward's profile, Iraola noted that Jackson is a "very, very good player" capable of providing both high-volume chances and goals. This existing appreciation is significant for a Chelsea squad currently struggling for offensive consistency under interim management.

Jackson’s return and the forward logjam

Jackson’s loan spell in Bavaria yielded 10 goals in 29 appearances, yet Bayern have opted to pass on the permanent transfer. "We will not trigger the option for Nicolas Jackson," Eberl stated, as reported by Football London, leaving the striker in a state of flux with six years remaining on the eight-year contract he signed in 2023. His return creates a selection headache; Chelsea’s recruitment strategy has already congested the final third with the arrivals of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap. However, Jackson’s underlying metrics remain strong, and his agent, Diomansy Kamara, told Football London that the player remains focused on his remaining European commitments before addressing his future. If Chelsea choose to sell rather than integrate him under a new manager, they will likely seek to recoup the bulk of the €65 million valuation established in the Bayern agreement to satisfy PSR requirements following a period of unprecedented spending.

Iraola remains at Bournemouth until the conclusion of the current Premier League campaign before Chelsea can finalise any formal approach.
