Arsenal And Frankfurt Compete For Real Madrid Defender Víctor Valdepeñas

Arsenal and Eintracht Frankfurt are locked in a battle for Real Madrid’s 19-year-old defender Víctor Valdepeñas, who has a €50m release clause.

Arsenal are preparing to rival Eintracht Frankfurt for the signing of Real Madrid defender Víctor Valdepeñas, who carries a €50 million (£43 million) release clause. According to reports from TeamTalk, Arsenal Sporting Director Andrea Berta is ready to move for the 19-year-old if the player indicates a desire to leave the Bernabéu this summer. Sky Sports Germany reports that Frankfurt have already initiated concrete talks with the player’s representatives, though the Spain U19 international remains under contract in Madrid until June 2029.

Arsenal’s tactical interest and Berta’s recruitment shift

The pursuit of Valdepeñas aligns with Mikel Arteta’s established tactical preference for versatile, left-footed defenders. Standing 1.88m, the teenager fits the physical profile of the physical "hybrid" defenders Arsenal have prioritised recently, such as Riccardo Calafiori and Jakub Kiwior, both of whom have featured as left-sided centre-backs and inverted left-backs. This interest marks one of the first major recruitment drives under Andrea Berta, who joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in April 2025. Berta’s familiarity with the Spanish market is expected to be a factor as Arsenal look to navigate the €50 million buyout clause, a significant fee for a player with limited senior experience but high internal valuation at Valdepeñas' current club.

Valdepeñas' emergence under Xabi Alonso

Despite his age, Valdepeñas has rapidly ascended through the Real Madrid ranks, culminating in a senior debut against Deportivo Alavés in December 2025. Starting at left-back, he played 78 minutes in a 2-1 victory, earning public praise from manager Xabi Alonso. Speaking after the match, Alonso noted that the defender "competed well and was very steady," highlighting a temperament that has attracted European scouts. Valdepeñas admitted to nerves during his debut when speaking to reporters, yet his performance solidified his standing as a top prospect. Real Madrid now face a dilemma; while the €50 million clause provides financial protection, they are reportedly hesitant to lose an academy graduate to a direct European rival, particularly after facing Arsenal in the 2025/26 Champions League semi-finals.

The defender's decision will likely depend on guaranteed playing time as he weighs Frankfurt's concrete proposal against Arsenal’s interest.
