Arsenal Confirm Karl Hein Transfer As Goalkeeper Joins Werder Bremen On Permanent Deal

Arsenal have sold goalkeeper Karl Hein to Werder Bremen for £2.6m, marking the club's second major exit of the summer as Mikel Arteta refreshes his squad.

Arsenal have officially confirmed the permanent transfer of Estonian international goalkeeper Karl Hein to Werder Bremen for a reported €3 million (£2.6 million). The 24-year-old, who spent the 2025/26 season on loan with the Bundesliga side, has reportedly agreed to a four-year contract running until the summer of 2030 after the German club triggered an option-to-buy clause. The deal marks Arsenal's second senior departure of the summer window following Jakub Kiwior’s move to Porto, as Mikel Arteta begins a squad refresh following the club's recent Premier League title win.

Werder Bremen secure long-term number one

The move provides Werder Bremen with a permanent solution in goal, with Sporting Director Clemens Fritz confirming in a club statement that Hein is expected to lead the team as the "strong number one between the posts" for the upcoming campaign. This transition is facilitated by the expected departure of Bremen's current first-choice goalkeeper, Mio Backhaus, to SC Freiburg. Despite making only two Bundesliga appearances during his loan spell against Bayern Munich and St. Pauli, Hein impressed the coaching staff sufficiently to warrant the €3 million investment. Hein, who joined the Arsenal academy in 2018 from Nomme United, expressed his desire to stay in Germany, stating he "felt at home at SVW from day one."

Arsenal's PSR boost and squad rotation

For Arsenal, the transfer represents strategic business regarding Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). As Hein is an academy graduate who spent eight years at the club, the £2.6 million fee is recorded as pure profit on the balance sheet. This follows a trend of Arsenal extracting value from fringe players; Hein leaves London having made only one competitive senior appearance for the Gunners, a Carabao Cup tie against Brighton in November 2022. While he was frequently named on the bench during his time at the Emirates, his path to the first team remained blocked by established starters. His exit, alongside Kiwior's, provides the financial flexibility required for Arteta to target high-profile reinforcements during the current window.

The transfer will officially be registered when the international window opens in July.
