Arsenal Loanee Ethan Nwaneri Faces Marseille Future Uncertainty Following Habib Beye Criticism

Ethan Nwaneri's Marseille loan has hit a crossroads as manager Habib Beye publically questioned the Arsenal teenager's commitment and training intensity.

Olympique de Marseille manager Habib Beye has issued a public ultimatum to Arsenal loanee Ethan Nwaneri, 19, citing concerns over the midfielder’s training standards and commitment. The England youth international, who moved to the Stade Vélodrome on 23 January 2026 for the remainder of the season, has seen his playing time evaporate following the appointment of Beye as Roberto De Zerbi’s successor in February. Arsenal are understood to be protected by a "play-or-pay" clause in the loan agreement, which forces Marseille to pay a higher fee — potentially rising from an initial £1.3 million to £3.5 million — if Nwaneri fails to meet specific appearance thresholds.

Habib Beye Questions Nwaneri’s Commitment

Since the managerial change in February, Nwaneri has failed to record a single Ligue 1 start, restricted primarily to brief substitute apps and consecutive matches as an unused substitute against OGC Nice and FC Nantes. Speaking to the media following the Nice fixture, Beye was blunt regarding the teenager's lack of involvement. "He's a quality player, but he has to give us way more in his day-to-day commitment," Beye stated. "Other players gave way more. He is a big talent who needs to adapt to the intensity of Ligue 1. He must understand he's come to a very high-level club." This public critique marks a sharp decline for the player who scored just 13 minutes into his Marseille debut against Lens under De Zerbi.

Squad Competition and Financial Implications

Nwaneri’s struggles in France come after Arsenal sanctioned the loan to provide him senior minutes following their high-profile recruitment of Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke. At Marseille, however, he has slipped behind Mason Greenwood and Timothy Weah in the attacking pecking order. The tactical shift under Beye has prioritised physical intensity, a move that local journalist Fabrice Lamperti suggested has stifled the creative spark Nwaneri showed during his record-breaking emergence at Arsenal. While Nwaneri’s lack of minutes is a developmental setback for Mikel Arteta’s side, the financial structure of the deal ensures Marseille bear the cost of his exclusion. The Ligue 1 side faces a significant financial penalty if Nwaneri remains a peripheral figure during the final weeks of the campaign.

Arsenal staff are expected to monitor Nwaneri’s response to Beye’s comments ahead of his scheduled return to London Colney this summer.
