Arsenal’s Interest In Nico Paz Persists Despite €80M Real Madrid Buy-Back Clause

Arsenal are tracking Como's Nico Paz, but Real Madrid’s €80m buy-back clause complicates the potential deal. We analyse why the path to the Emirates remains a possibility.

Arsenal have been consistently linked with a move for Como midfielder Nico Paz, though the Gunners face a complex structural hurdle in the form of an €80 million buy-back clause held by Real Madrid. While the figure is widely reported to be active starting in the summer of 2027, the assumption that this clause automatically makes the Spanish giants the definitive destination for the 22-year-old is increasingly being challenged by analysts.

As first reported by TEAMtalk and subsequently corroborated by football.london, Arsenal maintain a long-standing interest in the Argentina international. Paz, who has become a key creative figure under Cesc Fàbregas at Como, has delivered consistent output in Serie A, recording 19 goals and 17 assists across 75 appearances in Italy. Despite this form, no official bids or formal agreements have been confirmed by any of the involved parties.

The Real Madrid Squad Fit

The primary complication for Real Madrid is the internal competition within their current squad. Paz has predominantly operated as a creative No.10, a role currently occupied by Jude Bellingham. With Bellingham established as one of the most significant figures in the team, re-integrating a player of Paz's profile creates an obvious tactical redundancy. Shifting Bellingham into a deeper role—a hypothetical solution often suggested—remains speculative and arguably ignores the current tactical balance implemented by the coaching staff.

Furthermore, any potential manoeuvre by Real Madrid is complicated by FIFA regulations surrounding "bridge transfers." If Madrid were to exercise the €80m buy-back clause only to sell the player on to a third party shortly thereafter, they would risk regulatory scrutiny. This restricts their ability to view the clause merely as a financial instrument to flip the player for profit.

Arsenal’s Strategic Pathway

For Arsenal, the pursuit of Paz is framed as long-term succession planning, specifically regarding the future of Martin Ødegaard. The Norway international is approaching a juncture where contract discussions will become critical, with his current deal set to expire in less than two years. Concerns regarding his long-term injury resilience have reportedly led Arsenal to scout natural successors, with Paz identified as a viable, like-for-like profile capable of operating in the advanced midfield role or, occasionally, from the right flank.

While Real Madrid currently hold the regulatory advantage, the lack of a clear path to the starting XI at the Bernabéu could provide Arsenal with leverage. If Arsenal opt to formalise their interest, they may be able to present a more compelling sporting project to the player, offering a more immediate pathway to regular minutes than is currently available in Madrid.
