Arsenal To Finalise Mikel Arteta Contract Extension Following End Of Title Race

Arsenal and Mikel Arteta will finalise a contract extension after the season ends to maintain focus on the title race, cementing his long-term future in London.

Arsenal are preparing to secure manager Mikel Arteta to a new long-term contract extension once the current season concludes, with both parties prioritising the club's ongoing title pursuit over formal negotiations. According to Fabrizio Romano, the 44-year-old Spaniard is in constant dialogue with the board, but a final agreement is expected to be reached at "any moment" after the final whistle of the 2025/26 campaign. Despite signing an extension in September 2024 that runs until June 2027, the club intends to reward Arteta's consistent transformation of the squad into perennial Premier League and Champions League contenders.

Contract details and Arteta's earning status

Arteta is currently the second-highest paid manager in the Premier League, trailing only Manchester City's Pep Guardiola. The former midfielder commands a salary understood to be approximately £15m per year, a figure that followed his previous contract renewal in late 2024. While specific terms of the new proposal remain under wraps, the extension is expected to reflect his status among Europe’s elite coaches. Writing in his Daily Briefing, Romano noted that "nothing will be done or completed now," as the focus remains entirely on the pitch. These talks follow the early groundwork laid by club representatives in January 2026 to ensure stability following the departure of former Sporting Director Edu.

Tactical stability and squad evolution

Since his appointment in December 2019, Arteta has overseen a significant shift in Arsenal’s competitive ceiling, moving from a battle for European qualification to consecutive second-place finishes in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons. By securing Arteta beyond 2027, Arsenal aim to maintain continuity during a period of administrative transition, with the club now operating under a revised structure. During his last contract announcement, Arteta stated he felt "challenged and supported," expressing a desire to exceed the progress made since his arrival. With the squad boasting one of the youngest average ages among the league's top four, the hierarchy views the manager as the essential component in North London for the foreseeable future.

Formal announcements regarding the length of the new deal and updated salary terms are expected in June.
