Barcelona Prepare Squad Clear-Out To Fund Transfers For Álvarez And Bastoni

Barcelona plan a major summer clear-out involving Frenkie de Jong and Ferran Torres to fund move for Julian Álvarez and comply with La Liga financial rules.

Barcelona are reportedly planning a significant squad overhaul this summer to comply with La Liga’s 1:1 spending rule, with Frenkie de Jong, Andreas Christensen, and Ferran Torres among the high-profile players set for the exit. According to reports from Goal and MARCA, the club aims to slash its wage bill to facilitate an estimated €130 million recruitment drive targeting Manchester City’s Julian Álvarez and Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni. The departures are framed as a necessary cycle refresh following a Champions League quarter-final exit, with the club prioritising the sale of high earners and academy products to generate the 'pure profit' required by league financial regulations.

Wage bill pressure and the De Jong situation

Frenkie de Jong (27, midfielder) remains the primary candidate for a departure due to his reported €400,000-a-week salary and recurring fitness issues. Having arrived from Ajax in 2019 for €75 million, the Dutch international’s contract is a significant outlier in Barcelona’s current structure. This financial pressure is compounded by the situation of Andreas Christensen (28, defender), whose contract expires in June 2026. Reports from Barca Universal suggest the club will not offer an extension following his long-term ACL injury suffered in December 2025. With a valuation of approximately €35 million for Ferran Torres (24, forward) as he enters his final contract year, sporting director Deco is working to extract maximum value from a squad that remains top-heavy despite recent domestic success.

Exit routes for academy products and loanees

The club is also looking to monetize younger assets to balance the books. Marc Casadó (22, midfielder) has reportedly decided to leave after seeing his minutes restricted under Hansi Flick, with Barcelona setting a €30 million asking price. Meanwhile, Ansu Fati (23, forward) appears likely to make his move to AS Monaco permanent. According to Tribuna, the Ligue 1 side is prepared to trigger an €11 million purchase option included in his current loan deal. Flick, addressing the upcoming window in recent press conferences, noted that while team building is essential, "accurate decisions" must be made to avoid further financial missteps. By offloading these assets, Barcelona hope to secure the flexibility needed to register new arrivals without the restrictive spending caps that have hindered their recent registration windows.

Negotiations for the departure of these five players are expected to accelerate before the June 30 financial deadline.
