Barcelona Propose Second Loan For Marcus Rashford As Manchester United Weigh Permanent Exit Options

Barcelona are pushing for a second loan deal for Marcus Rashford, as Manchester United face a decision between a permanent sale or a contract risk in 2027.

Barcelona have entered negotiations with Manchester United to secure a second consecutive loan for Marcus Rashford, according to reports from Sky Germany and talkSPORT. Despite holding a €30m (£26m) option to buy the 28-year-old forward following his current season-long spell at the Nou Camp, the Catalan club is reportedly stalling on a permanent transfer due to ongoing financial constraints. While Rashford has expressed a clear desire to remain in Spain, a further temporary switch would leave Manchester United in a precarious position, with the player set to enter the final 12 months of his £300,000-a-week contract upon his eventual return in June 2027.

Financial hurdles and Barcelona’s prioritisation

As first reported by Florian Plettenberg, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has sanctioned Rashford’s continuation at the club, but the €30m buyout clause remains a hurdle. Barcelona are currently prioritising a move for Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez, leaving little room in their wage bill or transfer budget for Rashford’s permanent fee. Speaking in December 2025, Rashford said, "What I want is to stay at Barca. It's the ultimate goal... I'm in the perfect place." However, Manchester United’s hierarchy, led by INEOS, is understood to prefer a permanent sale this summer to satisfy Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Clearing Rashford’s significant salary is a key component of a rebuild led by interim manager Michael Carrick, especially with his estimated transfer value currently sitting at €38.5m.

Premier League interest and Chelsea volatility

While Barcelona remains Rashford’s preferred destination, domestic alternatives are emerging. Reports from Football Insider suggest Tottenham Hotspur have registered interest, though a move is contingent on Spurs avoiding relegation as they sit 18th in the Premier League table as of April 2026. Simultaneously, Chelsea have been linked with a move for the forward, though no formal offer has been verified. The West London club is currently without a permanent manager following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior after only 106 days. Any move for Rashford from Stamford Bridge would require the approval of a new coach and would likely be a permanent deal, offering Manchester United the clean break they desire but which Barcelona is currently unable to provide.

Negotiations are expected to continue through May as United determines whether the security of a permanent sale outweighs the risk of Rashford’s value diminishing during a second loan in Catalonia.
