Barcola Clarifies Tactical Role Following £123M Liverpool Transfer

Bradley Barcola has detailed the tactical discussions with Andoni Iraola that underpinned his summer move to Anfield, as the club manages attacking injury absences.

Bradley Barcola has provided clarity on the tactical assurances given to him by Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola during his summer transition from Paris Saint-Germain. The 24-year-old, who moved to Anfield in late August on a five-year contract, cost Liverpool an initial £106m with an additional £17m in performance-related add-ons. As of 11 October 2026, the France international has made five appearances for the club across all competitions.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Liverpool's meeting with Manchester City, Barcola explained that Iraola's specific vision for his role was decisive in his decision to move. "When I spoke to him before signing, it was about playing out wide, doing what I do best and playing with lots of pace," Barcola said. "That’s why he thought I was a good fit for this team. He knows I attack a lot but also defend a lot. He told me that’s exactly what he needed from me."

Barcola noted that this demand for defensive diligence, coupled with the freedom to attack, aligns with his personal preference for high-intensity, direct football. While he has predominantly operated as a left winger throughout his career, the adaptability of his role is becoming central to Liverpool's current strategy as they navigate a challenging period of the domestic season.

Managing Squad Depth Amid Injuries

The forward's integration into the side has faced external scrutiny due to his wait for a first goal in Liverpool colours. This has prompted a public defence from Andoni Iraola, who has cautioned against judging the player solely on statistical output. "I don't think he's in a bad moment," Iraola told reporters. "The problem with wingers or strikers is if they don't score a goal, 'they haven't played well'."

Iraola’s management of the squad is currently being tested by the unavailability of key attackers Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak, both of whom sustained injuries during the October international break. With the side facing a congested schedule, Iraola highlighted Barcola’s versatility as a key asset. The manager noted that while the Frenchman typically features on the flank, he is capable of covering various positions across the front three, potentially providing a solution as the club manages the current injury crisis.
