Brian Brobbey Addresses Chelsea Interest As Sunderland Set €40M Valuation

Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey has responded to Chelsea transfer rumours as the London club considers a €40m move to bolster their struggling attack.

Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey has played down reports linking him with a summer move to Chelsea, stating he has received no official contact despite the London club identifying him as a primary target to fix their goalscoring issues. The 24-year-old, who arrived at the Stadium of Light from Ajax for €20 million in September 2025, is understood to be valued at €40 million by the Black Cats, a figure that would represent a club-record sale. While Chelsea admire Brobbey’s physical profile, the player told FootballTransfers that while interest from a top club is flattering, he remains unaware of any formal negotiations.

Chelsea's tactical shift and squad needs

Chelsea’s pursuit of Brobbey signals a shift in recruitment strategy following the departure of Liam Rosenior. The club is reportedly prioritising Premier League-proven physicality to address a stagnant frontline. Recent graduate Liam Delap has struggled to adapt to the pressure at Stamford Bridge, returning just one goal in 25 appearances this season. This lack of production is compounded by the situation surrounding Nicolas Jackson; currently on loan at Bayern Munich, the German giants have reportedly declined to trigger their £56.3 million purchase option. Brobbey’s arrival would provide a focal point that Chelsea have lacked since the start of the campaign, regardless of whether Jackson is reintegrated into the squad.

Sunderland's valuation and competing interest

Sunderland are under no immediate pressure to sell their talisman, who is under contract until 2029. The reported €40 million asking price would surpass the €30.5 million received for Jobe Bellingham, reflecting Brobbey’s importance to a side currently 10th in the Premier League. Despite scoring six goals in 27 games, his value lies in his elite hold-up play. Speaking on Sky Sports, pundit Don Goodman described the striker as "unique" in his ability to retain possession, even if he is not a high-volume scorer. While Bayern Munich were previously linked as a backup option for Harry Kane, Bild journalist Christian Falk has dismissed the intensity of their pursuit, reporting that Brobbey is not currently a high priority for the Bavarian club.

With Bayern likely out of the running, Chelsea may have a clear path if they choose to meet Sunderland's record-breaking valuation this summer.
