Brighton And Newcastle Tracking Werder Bremen Goalkeeper Mio Backhaus

Newcastle and Brighton are monitoring Werder Bremen's Mio Backhaus, with the 22-year-old goalkeeper valued at €20m following a standout Bundesliga season.

Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United have expressed serious interest in signing Werder Bremen goalkeeper Mio Backhaus ahead of the summer 2026 transfer window, according to reports from Sky Germany. The 22-year-old shot-stopper is valued at approximately €20 million (£17.4m) by the Bundesliga club following a breakout campaign where he secured the number-one shirt. While Brighton and Newcastle lead the Premier League interest, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Bayer Leverkusen, and Borussia Dortmund have also reportedly enquired about the German youth international, who remains under contract at the Weserstadion until June 2028.

Strategic fit for Premier League suitors

Newcastle’s pursuit of Backhaus aligns with a projected overhaul of their goalkeeping department. Current first-choice Nick Pope will be 34 by the 2026 summer window, and the recruitment of a younger, ball-playing alternative fits the profile sought by the club’s sporting hierarchy to provide long-term competition. Brighton’s interest follows their established recruitment model of identifying high-ceiling talent before their valuation peaks; Backhaus has seen his market price rise significantly from an estimated €2m just twelve months ago. The €20m asking price would represent a record sale for a Werder Bremen goalkeeper, surpassing the fee received for Marc-André ter Stegen’s move from Gladbach to Barcelona as a historical Bundesliga benchmark for young keepers.

Backhaus’s rise to prominence

After a productive loan spell at Eredivisie side FC Volendam during the 2023/24 season, Backhaus returned to Bremen and displaced more experienced options to make over 30 appearances in the 2025/26 campaign. Speaking to TeamTalk, Backhaus recently emphasised his connection to his current club, stating, "I've been here for eight years, this is my city, my club." However, the financial reality for Werder Bremen suggests a significant offer may be difficult to refuse. Peter Niemeyer, Werder’s Head of Licensing, previously described Backhaus as a "great goalkeeping talent" capable of the highest level. Given the player signed an extension in 2025 to protect his value, Bremen hold a strong negotiating position as the multi-club race for his signature intensifies.

With four years remaining on his current deal, any move in 2026 will likely depend on whether the interested parties meet Bremen's full valuation upfront.
