Bruno Fernandes Admits Transfer Regret Over Declan Rice’s Arsenal Move

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has revealed his disappointment that the club failed to beat Arsenal to the £105m signing of midfielder Declan Rice.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, 31, has expressed his frustration that the club failed to sign Declan Rice before his £105 million move to Arsenal in 2023. Speaking in an interview with Joel Beya, the Portuguese midfielder revealed he viewed the England international as the "perfect fit" for Old Trafford and felt genuine disappointment when the 27-year-old opted for North London. The comments highlight a long-standing recruitment gap for United, who under previous manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had discussed signing the former West Ham captain as early as 2021.

United’s long-standing pursuit and missed opportunity

The failure to secure Rice represents a significant "what if" in Manchester United’s recent recruitment history. While the club eventually pivoted to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid in a deal worth up to £70 million in 2022, the Brazilian arrived at age 30, whereas Rice offered a decade-long solution. Solskjaer confirmed that internal discussions regarding Rice took place three years before his eventual exit from West Ham, yet United never formalised a bid that met the Hammers' valuation. Fernandes, who remains United’s primary creative engine and is currently chasing Premier League assist records, noted that he always believed Rice was the profile required to balance the club’s midfield transition.

Tactical fit and personal relationship

Fernandes and Rice share a professional rapport, having spent the 2023 pre-season training together at a private fitness camp in the Algarve shortly before Rice joined Mikel Arteta’s side. “I’ve always said, Rice was a player to play for Man Utd,” Fernandes told Beya. “I was really sad when he chose to go to Arsenal. I always thought he would be a perfect fit.” This tactical void has been a persistent issue at Old Trafford; while Kobbie Mainoo has since emerged as a technical deep-lying presence, the club has lacked the high-mobility defensive archetype Rice provides. Since his move, Rice has anchored an Arsenal side that has consistently challenged for the title, while United have moved into the Ruben Amorim era still seeking a permanent long-term partner for Mainoo.

Rice sits firmly within the spine of a settled Arsenal squad, while Fernandes continues to carry the creative burden for a United side still navigating a search for midfield stability.
