Bruno Fernandes Backs Michael Carrick For Permanent Manchester United Role

Bruno Fernandes is reportedly lobbying Manchester United for Michael Carrick’s permanent appointment following a record-breaking season in the No. 10 role.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is reportedly urging the club’s leadership to appoint Michael Carrick as permanent manager following a successful interim spell that secured Champions League qualification. According to Fabrizio Romano, the 31-year-old attacking midfielder is "very happy" with Carrick’s leadership, with the pair maintaining an excellent professional relationship since the former United midfielder replaced Ruben Amorim in January 2026. This internal support from senior figures comes as United officials, led by the INEOS group, evaluate their long-term options for the dugout after a resurgent second half of the season.

Tactical Shift Triggers Fernandes Renaissance

The primary driver for Fernandes’ support is understood to be the tactical shift implemented by Carrick. While Ruben Amorim frequently utilised the Portuguese international in a deeper, disciplined central midfield role, Carrick immediately reverted to a 4-2-3-1 system with Fernandes restored as a traditional No. 10. The move has proven statistically transformative; Fernandes recently claimed the FWA Footballer of the Year award after reaching 20 Premier League assists for the season. This spike in productivity is a significant departure from his form in 2025, where his creative output slumped during United's mid-recession under the previous regime.

Career Commitment Amid Saudi Interest

Fernandes’ satisfaction under Carrick appears to have direct implications for his future at Old Trafford. Prior to the managerial change, the captain had been heavily linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League, specifically Al-Hilal. However, Romano reports that Fernandes is now "tempted by staying" to continue the project under Carrick. Having secured a top-four finish with a 3-2 victory over Liverpool in May, United are in a stronger negotiating position regarding their talisman’s tenure. Carrick, for his part, has been public in his praise, stating that Fernandes is "playing some fantastic football" and remains a fundamental pillar of the club's future identity.

The Manchester United board is expected to make a final decision on the permanent managerial appointment before the opening of the summer transfer window.
