Chelsea Label Josh Acheampong Untouchable Amid Manchester United Interest

Chelsea have blocked Manchester United's initial interest in Josh Acheampong, labelling the 20-year-old defender 'untouchable' following his 2024 contract extension.

Chelsea have informed Manchester United that Josh Acheampong is not for sale after the Old Trafford club added the 20-year-old defender to their summer scouting shortlist. Despite United identifying the versatile academy graduate as a long-term solution for their central defence, Chelsea executives consider the player untouchable following his contract extension through June 2029, according to reporting by TeamTalk and Ben Jacobs.

Manchester United's defensive rebuild

Manchester United’s interest in Acheampong comes as the club moves into a new phase of defensive recruitment under Michael Carrick. Having previously tracked the London-born defender during his breakthrough into the senior set-up in May 2024, United scouts have reportedly monitored his adaptability across both centre-back and right-back positions. However, a move remains unlikely this summer given Acheampong’s contractual security. The five-year deal he signed in December 2024 provides Chelsea with significant leverage, mirroring the high valuations they have placed on previous academy graduates. While reports from Read Chelsea suggest the player is open to exploring his options if first-team minutes are limited under incoming manager Xabi Alonso, he recently stated on the Chelsea FC website that his focus remains on his boyhood club.

Chelsea’s firm stance and PSR context

Chelsea’s current refusal to negotiate reflects a shift after a turbulent period in late 2024. Acheampong was famously sidelined from both the first team and U21 squads in October of that year during a documented stand-off over his future, a hardline tactic previously used by the club during negotiations with Conor Gallagher. Although the sale of homegrown players offers "pure profit" benefits under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), the Chelsea hierarchy appears determined to retain Acheampong as a central pillar of their squad progression. The club previously rejected loan enquiries from Crystal Palace in January 2025 and dismissed speculative rumours regarding a potential swap deal for Alejandro Garnacho. With four years remaining on a deal understood to have ended the previous uncertainty, Chelsea hold a prohibitive asking price for one of their most highly-rated defensive assets.

The situation remains contingent on Alonso’s tactical integration of the youngster during pre-season training.
