Chelsea are in negotiations to sign Newcastle United striker Nick Woltemade as the German forward seeks an exit following a difficult debut season at St James' Park. According to reports from OneFootball and FootballTransfers, a high-level director has travelled to London to discuss a deal for the 24-year-old, who joined Newcastle for a club-record fee between £65m and £70m from VfB Stuttgart in August 2025. Despite being under contract until at least 2030 on a £140,000-a-week deal, Woltemade is reportedly unsettled, with BILD reporter Christian Falk noting the player has recently removed Newcastle-related content from his social media profiles.
Woltemade’s Tactical Struggles and Newcastle’s PSR Position
While Woltemade has registered 10 goals in all competitions this season, his form has declined sharply in 2026, finding the net only once since the turn of the year. This drought followed a promising start, including a debut goal against Wolves and a brace against Chelsea in December. A primary factor in his discontent is tactical; Newcastle have frequently deployed the 6ft 6in forward in a deeper attacking midfield role rather than his preferred position as a lone striker. With fellow summer signing Yoane Wissa also failing to provide consistent output, Newcastle may look to recoup a significant portion of the £65m spent on Woltemade to facilitate a squad rebuild and remain compliant with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Chelsea’s Strikeforce Reconfiguration under Rosenior
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior is reportedly keen on Woltemade as a focal point for his attack, despite the strong form of current striker Joao Pedro. While Rosenior praised Pedro on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, comparing his attributes to those of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe, the Brazilian has become a primary target for Arsenal. If Pedro departs for North London, Woltemade would arrive as a direct replacement. Chelsea's interest in a traditional No. 9 comes as the club looks to provide more physical presence in the final third. Elsewhere in the market, Manchester United's Marcus Rashford has expressed a desire to remain at Barcelona after clinching the La Liga title on loan, though the Spanish club's financial constraints may force a second loan rather than triggering their £26m permanent option.
Negotiations between Chelsea and Newcastle are expected to continue this week, with the possibility of a creative structure or player-plus-cash deal to bridge the valuation gap.
