Chelsea Secure Valentin Barco As Manchester United Advance On £43M Ederson Deal

Chelsea agree a deal for Valentin Barco from Strasbourg, while Manchester United move closer to a £43m agreement for Atalanta’s Ederson.

Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign Valentin Barco, the 21-year-old Argentinian midfielder, from sister-club Strasbourg for the 2026-27 season. As first reported by Fabrizio Romano, the deal includes a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, potentially extending his stay until 2032. Simultaneously, Manchester United have moved into advanced negotiations for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, 26, in a deal worth approximately £43 million (€50m-€53m), while Bayern Munich have officially ruled out a departure for Michael Olise despite interest from Liverpool.

Chelsea’s Multi-Club Growth and Alonso Transition

The acquisition of Barco marks the latest integration within the BlueCo multi-club model, following the path of captain Emmanuel Emegha in moving from Strasbourg to London. The deal is timed to coincide with Xabi Alonso’s arrival as Chelsea manager on July 1, 2026. Barco, who bid farewell to the Ligue 1 side on May 19, provides a specific tactical profile for Alonso's anticipated system, which often demands high-volume passing from deep-lying positions. Given Chelsea’s current midfield density, including Enzo Fernández and Moisés Caicedo—who cost a combined £222 million—Barco’s integration into the first-team squad suggests a long-term succession plan or a shift toward the three-man midfield structures Alonso utilised to win the Bundesliga title with Bayer Leverkusen.

Manchester United’s Midfield Rebuild and the Olise Stance

At Manchester United, the pursuit of Ederson has accelerated as the club seeks a permanent replacement for the outgoing Casemiro. Speaking after a Serie A fixture against Fiorentina, Atalanta head coach Raffaele Palladino confirmed Ederson’s absence was due to "concrete negotiations with a top club." The £43 million fee represents a significant profit for Atalanta, who signed the Brazilian from Salernitana for roughly €15 million in 2022. While United’s midfield overhaul progresses, their interest in Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise appears to have hit a definitive wall. Bayern Sporting Director Max Eberl stated Olise is "absolutely untouchable," with President Herbert Hainer confirming the Frenchman, 24, remains central to their plans under a contract running until 2029. This firm stance complicates Liverpool’s search for a long-term Mohamed Salah successor.

Manchester United expect to finalise personal terms with Ederson in the coming days, while Chelsea turn their focus toward trimming the squad to accommodate Barco ahead of pre-season.
