Chelsea Step Up £35M Joel Ordóñez Pursuit As João Pedro Urged To Join Barcelona

Chelsea target £35m Club Brugge defender Joel Ordóñez as Shaun Wright-Phillips urges striker João Pedro to consider a move to Barcelona.

Chelsea are intensifying their interest in Club Brugge defender Joel Ordóñez, 22, and recently deployed scouts to monitor the Ecuadorian international during his side's fixture against Anderlecht, according to reports in Sports Mole. The move for the centre-back, who is valued by the Belgian club at approximately €40 million (£35 million), has reportedly been endorsed by Moises Caicedo, his former teammate at Independiente del Valle and on the international stage. While Chelsea target defensive reinforcements, the club faces mounting pressure to retain star striker João Pedro, 24, as former winger Shaun Wright-Phillips publicly urged the Brazilian to force a move to Barcelona following Chelsea's fall to ninth in the Premier League.

Chelsea's defensive pivot and the Ordóñez profile

The pursuit of Ordóñez comes as Chelsea attempt to address a persistent defensive fragility that has seen them fall away from European contention. Since the 2024 departure of Thiago Silva, the squad has struggled with consistency from Tosin Adarabioyo and Benoit Badiashile. Ordóñez, who is under contract in Bruges until June 2029, offers the athletic profile favoured by the Chelsea hierarchy. According to Football FanCast, Moises Caicedo has recommended his compatriot to the club's sporting directors to help facilitate a transition to a higher defensive line. The scouting mission on 3 May suggests the interest has progressed beyond preliminary data analysis into active due diligence before the summer window opens.

Barcelona interest and the João Pedro exit message

While looking to build the squad, Chelsea must navigate interest in João Pedro, who joined from Brighton for £60 million in July 2025. Despite the club's poor form, Pedro has excelled, scoring 23 goals in 50 appearances. Barcelona sporting director Deco is reportedly monitoring the striker as an alternative to Julian Alvarez, according to FootballTransfers. Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, Shaun Wright-Phillips suggested the striker's career could be stifled by Chelsea's lack of Champions League football. "Given the way Chelsea has been run, if I were him, I would do everything to complete this transfer," Wright-Phillips stated. Although the Brazilian is contracted until 2033, the lack of European football for a second consecutive season may test the club’s resolve if a significant bid arrives from the Nou Camp.

Chelsea's upcoming recruitment window must now balance the need for young defensive talent like Ordóñez against the potential departure of their most productive attacking asset.
