Chelsea Target Bernardo Silva As Xabi Alonso Takes Charge At Stamford Bridge

Xabi Alonso has been appointed Chelsea manager on a four-year deal and is reportedly targeting Manchester City's Bernardo Silva as a key free agent signing.

Chelsea have officially appointed Xabi Alonso as manager on a four-year contract, with the Spaniard reportedly targeting Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva as his first major signing. According to reports in Spain, the West London club is weighing up a move for the 31-year-old, who is expected to leave the Etihad Stadium as a free agent this summer. The deal would represent a significant pivot in Chelsea's recruitment strategy, moving away from a strictly youth-led policy toward the inclusion of proven Premier League leaders to support a squad that has struggled for consistency under the BlueCo ownership.

Alonso secures greater authority over Chelsea recruitment

As first reported by The Guardian, Alonso's tenure officially begins on July 1, 2026, following the dismissal of Enzo Maresca earlier this year. Crucially, Alonso has been granted the title of 'Manager' rather than 'Head Coach', signaling a shift in power dynamics at Stamford Bridge. Speaking to the official Chelsea website, Alonso said: "From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies." While journalist Simon Phillips suggests Alonso is seeking specific assurances regarding the defensive line, the pursuit of Silva indicates a desire for tactical versatility. Chelsea face stiff competition for the Portuguese international, with Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Barcelona, and AC Milan all reportedly monitoring his situation.

Squad overhaul takes shape with Silva and Barco

The pursuit of Silva comes as Chelsea prepare for a busy window that includes the arrival of 21-year-old left-back Valentin Barco, who has already agreed to join from Strasbourg. This influx of technical talent coincides with interest from Manchester City in Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella. Outgoing City manager Pep Guardiola’s reported replacement, Enzo Maresca, has identified the 27-year-old Spaniard as a priority target for his first season at the Etihad. Including Silva—who previously commanded a £50m release clause during his peak years in Manchester—on a free transfer would provide Chelsea with elite-level experience at a fraction of the market cost. This shift reflects a correction of the previous policy that focused exclusively on players under 25, a strategy that saw the club cycle through multiple managers including Liam Rosenior and Maresca without achieving top-four stability.

Chelsea will now focus on finalising terms with Silva’s representatives before his current contract officially expires on June 30.
