Javier Pastore, the agent representing Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández, has moved to downplay the 25-year-old’s frequent visits to Madrid following a turbulent month that saw the player sanctioned by the club and the dismissal of manager Liam Rosenior. Speaking to AS, Pastore insisted that Fernández’s proximity to the Spanish capital is social rather than a precursor to a transfer, despite the Argentine being spotted at the Madrid Open this week while on leave from London.
Contractual Leverage and Disciplinary Friction
Chelsea’s position remains protected by a contract that runs until June 2032, yet the relationship between the club and its former record signing has demonstrably frayed. The board issued Fernández a two-match internal suspension in April following public comments regarding his desire to live in Madrid. While Pastore told Football España that the player "didn't understand the punishment" because he did not explicitly ask to leave, the timing coincided with Chelsea’s Champions League exit and the eventual sacking of Liam Rosenior. Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Gary Neville suggested Fernández and Marc Cucurella had undermined the manager in his final weeks, adding a layer of dressing room tension to the ongoing speculation.
Real Madrid Interest and Valuation Hurdles
Real Madrid are reportedly monitoring Fernández as they consider their long-term midfield succession plan, which currently features Fernández’s compatriot Franco Mastantuono. However, according to reports in Spain, the European champions are reluctant to meet Chelsea’s projected valuation of €100m-€150m. Chelsea face significant pressure under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and may eventually be tempted by a deal that allows them to recoup a figure close to the £106.8m paid to Benfica in 2023. While Pastore maintains that "whenever he has a day off, he comes to Madrid because I'm there," the optics of these visits, combined with the player's recent suspension, suggest a growing pivot toward a Stamford Bridge exit this summer.
Chelsea must now decide whether to integrate Fernández under new leadership or facilitate a move to La Liga to balance their accounts before the July accounting deadline.
