Federico Chiesa Prepared For Major Pay Cut To Secure Liverpool Exit

Federico Chiesa is reportedly ready to slash his €7.5m wages to end his difficult spell at Liverpool and secure a return to Italy's Serie A this summer.

Federico Chiesa (28, Liverpool, Winger) is reportedly willing to accept a significant reduction in his €7.5 million-a-year salary to facilitate a return to Serie A this summer. According to reports in Italy from La Gazzetta dello Sport, the forward is prepared to lower his financial demands to secure a move away from Anfield following a difficult spell in the Premier League. Chiesa, who signed a four-year contract through to June 2028 upon his arrival from Juventus in August 2024, has struggled for consistency and fitness under Arne Slot.

Injury struggles and squad hierarchy at Anfield

Following his arrival for an initial £10 million fee, Chiesa has been unable to mirror the form that saw him star at Euro 2020. His tenure on Merseyside has been defined by recurring muscle issues, a legacy of the ACL tear he suffered in 2022 while at Juventus. These fitness concerns have limited him to just one Premier League start by early 2026, leaving him on the periphery of a squad that recently secured a league title. Within Slot's tactical framework, Chiesa has found himself well behind Mohamed Salah in the pecking order on the right flank, failing to deliver the high-intensity physical output required by the coaching staff.

Serie A interest and market valuation

Italian outlets Calciomercato and La Gazzetta dello Sport have linked Chiesa with a return to several major Italian clubs, including Napoli, AC Milan, and his former side Juventus. Liverpool are understood to be seeking between £13 million and £21 million to sanction a permanent transfer, effectively aiming to recoup their original £12.5 million total package investment. For Italian suitors, Chiesa's willingness to forgo his current wage bracket is a necessity rather than a gesture, as the financial landscape in Serie A remains constrained by strict wage controls. Following the departure of Luis Díaz to Bayern Munich last year, Liverpool may require further offensive reinforcements if Chiesa is allowed to depart this summer.

Negotiations are expected to accelerate as the European season concludes, with all parties aiming to find a resolution before the start of pre-season.
