Gary Neville Urges Manchester United Midfield Overhaul As Mason Mount Future Remains Uncertain

Gary Neville has named Sandro Tonali and Ezri Konsa as key targets for Manchester United while questioning Mason Mount’s long-term future at Old Trafford.

Gary Neville has identified the recruitment of two central midfielders and a top-tier centre-half as the urgent priority for Manchester United following Mason Mount’s sustained struggle for form and fitness at Old Trafford. Speaking during a fan Q&A, the former United captain outlined a recruitment strategy designed to address the team's ageing spine, naming Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali and Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa as realistic targets to bolster the squad under interim manager Michael Carrick.

Neville targets Tonali and Konsa for United spine

Neville outlined a two-tier approach to United’s summer business, distinguishing between high-profile "dream" acquisitions and pragmatic additions. According to reports in Football365, Neville cited defensive stability and midfield control as the primary deficiencies in the current squad. "If you said three, I'd want two midfield players and a centre-half," Neville stated, later identifying Tonali, Konsa, and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson as attainable options. His more ambitious list features Declan Rice, Harry Kane, and PSG captain Marquinhos. The call for a defensive overhaul comes as 33-year-old Harry Maguire enters the final stages of his career and at a time when the club lacks settled cover in the pivot positions alongside Kobbie Mainoo.

Mason Mount and the tactical dilemma

The 27-year-old Mason Mount remains a point of significant friction in United’s tactical setup. Signed for a total package of £60m from Chelsea in 2023, the midfielder has failed to surpass 1,000 minutes in a single Premier League campaign due to recurring injury issues. Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Neville criticised the previous management's decision to deploy Mount in unconventional roles. "I struggle at times to watch him in his position, but actually putting him out there on the left wing-back is absolutely ridiculous," Neville remarked. With United currently third in the table and operating without European football this season, the pressure on Mount to justify his place is intensifying as INEOS evaluates the efficiency of high-wage squad members who offer limited availability.

United directors must now weigh Neville's suggested overhaul against the financial constraints of previous heavy spending as the summer window approaches.
