Harry Kane To Reject Manchester United Interest In Favour Of Bayern Munich Extension

Harry Kane is expected to sign a new deal at Bayern Munich until 2028, rejecting interest from Manchester United after his 2026 release clause expired.

Harry Kane (32, Bayern Munich) has reportedly decided to stay in Germany and is expected to sign a contract extension until 2028 or 2029, effectively ending Manchester United's long-standing pursuit of the England captain. According to reports from TeamTalk and Goal, a £57m release clause in Kane’s current deal expired in early 2026 without being triggered, leaving Bayern in a dominant negotiating position as they look to secure his future beyond his current 2027 expiry.

Bayern Munich strengthen grip on Kane after clause expiry

The expiry of Kane's exit clause has removed the immediate threat of a cut-price return to the Premier League. Uli Hoeness, a member of the Bayern Munich Supervisory Board, confirmed to Goal that the club is "under no pressure" given the striker's contentment in Bavaria. This stability contrasts with the £86m initial fee Bayern paid Tottenham Hotspur in 2023, a record investment that has yielded two Bundesliga titles by 2026. Kane has adapted seamlessly to German football, and Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider noted that his decision not to activate his own release option is the clearest indication yet of his commitment to the Allianz Arena. While Manchester United have secured Champions League football for next season under Michael Carrick, they now face the reality of a market where Kane is no longer attainable.

United pivot as Ugarte exit nears

While interest in Kane cool, the squad overhaul under Sir Jim Ratcliffe continues in other areas. Fabrizio Romano, speaking on recent transfer developments, stated there is a "95% chance" that midfielder Manuel Ugarte (25, Manchester United) will leave the club in the summer of 2026. This potential departure highlights a shift in United's tactical profile following the arrival of Benjamin Sesko for £73.7m. The club’s recruitment strategy has steered toward high-potential younger profiles, making the pursuit of 32-year-old Kane a departure from their current financial model. With United already committed to Sesko's development and facing the likely sale of Ugarte to balance the books, the heavy investment required to lure Kane away from a stable situation at Bayern appears increasingly prohibitive for the Old Trafford hierarchy.

Bayern Munich officials are expected to open formal negotiations on Kane's new terms before the start of the 2026/27 season.
